Quadriceps Tendon Injuries

The quadriceps are a powerful and large muscle group that form the bulk of the thigh and are essential for keeping the knee joint stable. The quadriceps tendon attaches these muscles to the kneecap and a tear in this tendon, although uncommon, can make walking and other activities more difficult.

The quadriceps tendon is the strong, fibrous tissue that connects the quadriceps to the patella or kneecap and it is essential for straightening the leg and supporting the knee joint. There are certain risk factors that can increase your risk of developing a tear in the quadriceps tendon; it more commonly affects men and women over the age of 40 but being an active runner or playing jumping sports can increase risk.

A mild tear can cause swelling and discomfort and affect your range of movement, but a complete tear can mean the knee can’t straighten properly and the kneecap isn’t sitting in the proper position. You may experience a tearing or popping sensation at the time of injury. The knee will often give way when walking.

FAQs

During your consultation, Mr David Houlihan-Burne will take a fully medical history, covering all symptoms you’ve been experiencing. As well as a physical examination, he may order additional tests such as an X-ray or MRI scan.

Treatment usually depends on the severity of the tear and your pre-injury activity level. For a mild tear, non-surgical treatment can usually improve symptoms. This may include wearing a brace and undergoing physiotherapy aimed at strengthening the quads.

If the tear is severe, Mr David Houlihan-Burne may recommend surgery to repair the tendon and reattach it to the kneecap. Early surgical intervention typically produces the best results.
